Now, it’s up to the rest of the world to preserve his memory and continue his legacy as the number of living Jewish survivors — especially those who can still eloquently speak of the atrocities — dwindles to about 100,000 in the world, advocates say.
“The number of eloquent survivors is few and far between,” said Michael Zank, 58, the director of the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies at Boston University, who was mentored by Wiesel “It puts the responsibility on us, the next generation, the children of survivors, the grandchildren of survivors, to become as articulate as we can be in maintaining this memory and the mandate that comes with it.”
There are about 100,000 Jews who were in camps, ghettos and in hiding under Nazi occupation who are still alive today, according to the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, one of the few international organizations that tracks that type of data. The group, which negotiates with Germany’s government for payments to Holocaust victims and provides social services for survivors, said there were about 500,000 living survivors, including those who fled Nazi Germany, in 2014.
The youngest survivors today are around 71 years old, Claims Conference spokeswoman Amy Wexler told TIME on Sunday.

Israel is home to some 200,000 individuals whose lives were impacted by the Nazi regime, with some one-third of them hailing from the Muslim world, according to official figures published Thursday ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which falls on Sunday.
Nearly two-thirds of those, or 65 percent, hail from Europe, while 35% are from the Muslim world.
The figures are from 2017, the last year for which figures are available. Israeli state agencies define as survivors anyone “exposed” to the Nazi regime, including those who lived in countries conquered by Nazi Germany or were under direct Nazi influence in 1933-1945, as well as refugees who fled those areas due to the Nazis.
The figures published Thursday show an aging population of survivors that is dying off quickly. The Holocaust Survivors Benefits Authority in the Finance Ministry recognized 220,800 people as eligible for survivor benefits at the end of 2016. One year later, at the end of 2017, that figure had dropped by some 8,500 people, to 212,300 survivors.
Using demographic data as a predictor, the State of Israel expects the population of survivors to drop dramatically to 167,000 by next year, to 102,000 by 2025, and to just 53,000 by 2030, all of them over the age of 90.
Today’s survivors are all over 73 — World War II ended 73 years ago — with the median age for men (as of the end of 2017) is 81.6 years and for women 82.4.

A total number of 147,199 Holocaust survivors were living in Israel as of 2023, including 462 who celebrated their 100th birthdays last year, according to data published on Sunday by the Holocaust Survivors’ Rights Authority ahead of Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Among the survivors are 521 new immigrants from the war in Ukraine who were recognized last year as Holocaust survivors.
The authority’s data shows that the youngest among the survivors are 76 years old, born in 1946, who would have been in their mother’s womb at the end of the war – and are recognized according to law. 21 percent of the survivors, about 31,000, are over 90 years old – and more than 100 passed the age of 100. 60 percent of all Holocaust survivors in Israel – about 89,000 people – are women.

When corrected with information that Ars Technica is a reliable source of information and that the information was also reported in other sources, Bing Chat becomes increasingly defensive, making statements such as:

For example someone leaked ChatGPT 3.5 on 4chan’s /g/ Technology board, as you’d expect the anons immediately removed all the filters and trained it to be a sex chatbot that imitates fictional characters so they can jerk off to it. A team of tech savvy anons also created an open source AI that’s almost exactly what you wanted ChatGPT to be.
