So you’ve heard that men just won’t go to therapy—except in the setups to old jokes. You know the ones. A sad sack walks into the shrink’s office in the seventies with a domestic problem. His wife thinks she’s a chicken, clucks all over the place. The clinician listens as the man rants, then scribbles on a pad of paper and hands him a scrip for psychiatric meds. The guy rejects it: “Doctor, haven’t you been listening? We need the eggs!”

Or here’s a new one: It’s 2025, and a man is unloading on his therapist. ICE agents are snooping around his office. The Secretary of Health and Human Services is questioning the legitimacy of the antidepressant he takes. Oh, also, his wife is a federal employee who’s worried about losing her job. It feels like everyone in the world is targeting him. He’s used to his shrink telling him to change his outlook and anticipates her response. “Doc, am I just crazy?” he asks, hopefully.

“No,” she replies, to his consternation. “Everyone is out to get you.”

For many Texas therapists, this isn’t a laughing matter. It’s reminiscent of real conversations they’ve had recently. Since Donald Trump retook the White House, crisis lines won’t stop ringing, clinicians’ calendars have been filled in like ballots, and long-term clients have eschewed unpacking domestic matters in favor of discussing the national news.

Nicole Van Ness, a couples counselor in Grapevine who has practiced for two decades and teaches at Southern Methodist University, said clients who had once come to her to work through disputes about household divisions of labor now have concerns about a house divided: Mom trusted Fauci; Dad trusted Trump and ivermectin. How could they still make love? “It’s no longer ‘You and I have different world views,’ ” she told me. “It’s ‘Your support of one side or the other represents this thing to me that is morally reprehensible.’ ”

Yes. You want to murder your children, drug and mutilate other people’s children, and flood my nation with niggers. You are morally reprehensible and since I can’t escape from you I only have one choice left.

During Trump’s first term, many fixated on how, to pick one particularly ridiculous example, Trump was caught on camera unsteadily drinking from a bottle of water with two hands.

These are people are indeed mentally ill.

These are folks who, despite being largely insulated from the administration’s more troubling second-term policies, are haunted at night by their X feeds.

If any of these people has a life they would turn off the internet and go do somthing.

Trump’s first election, in 2016, provided a donation in kind to the therapy industry. According to an analysis of a Centers for Disease Control survey of nearly half a million citizens, the number of self-reported days of poor mental health in states where a majority of voters supported Hillary Clinton rose by 15 percent from the month before the 2016 election to the month after. Meanwhile, the number in Trump-voting states stayed flat.

Too bad the suicide rate didn’t spike.

Therapists knew they had to change their practices to meet the moment, but to this day, they don’t seem entirely certain how to do so. The stresses caused by swings in policy resist a clinician’s usual tools because they are ongoing. Even the death of a loved one, said one therapist, is straightforward by contrast: The terrible thing happened, and now the grieving person must learn to move forward. But there’s no self-caring your way to a more flourishing democracy.

Trump’s election is worse than a loved one dying to libtards. There are no words to describe how much I hate these race traitors.

After Trump’s second election, Van Ness and Aliya Sheriff, a Metroplex-born-and-raised doctor of psychology whose experience includes work with human trafficking victims, noticed that online therapy forums abounded with questions about whether it was okay to bring political discussions into the session. In the absence of clear guidelines, a majority of therapists, research indicates, do disclose their politics to patients, but many ardently believe they shouldn’t. The debates were heated, with the name-calling endemic to Facebook; being a therapist, apparently, doesn’t make one immune to emotional outbursts.

Because almost all therapist are mentally ill. That’s why they became therapist. Normal people don’t want to hang out with mentally ill people. Not even for money.
