To answer your question. No, a student does not need to be a member of the LDS church to attend BYU. They however do have to follow the BYU honor code which includes but is not limited to grooming standards, following the law of chastity, and obeying the Church’s health code called “The Word of Wisdom”. The Word of Wisdom prohibits the consumption of alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee, and abuse of other substances. Active church members are also given tuition discounts. On average the BYU student body is 95%-99% LDS members per a school year. So almost all if not all of the of the people you saw at the event were LDS members.
Yea I need to abuse my substances.
Damn. Looks like I will not be attending BYU.
